T8 Plus N100 SSD temperature

Post by peo »

Just got my T8 Plus (N100) yesterday and noticed that the internal SSD is marked as HOT in CrystalDiskinfo even when the computer has been sitting idle (as idle it can be with windows, around 10% CPU usage of which most is caused by the task manager) even after 90 minutes between the checks.

Is this because the included SSD is a SATA-SSD, or is it because the brand ("HUGWORLD") in general ?
66 degrees now (almost another hour later).

I have the pc well-placed with the bottom and rear wents out into the room at a temperature just below 20C. Also, the SSD has not been stressed (tested) to reach this temperature.

That’s totally normal! Since mini PCs and laptops are more compact than regular desktops, the internal space for heat dissipation is limited. If the room temperature is a bit high, that can also raise the CPU temp. Plus, this device uses integrated graphics, which tends to generate more heat compared to a dedicated GPU.

We recommend cleaning the fan dust regularly and using high-quality thermal paste for better cooling. If you're using high-performance mode, it's normal for temps to go up—switching to "Balanced" or "Power Saver" mode can help reduce that. Also, placing the PC in a well-ventilated area will help with overall heat dissipation too!

Let's have the opinions from the experts (on these systems) as well.
I think 65-68 deg C (not USA-degrees) is too hot, otherwise the SSDs (both SATA and NVMe) in all my other MiniPCs are running too cold. The best I can compare to, is the also recently gotten AceMagic Vista V1 (N150), where the SATA SSD keeps a temperature about 30 deg C (not USA-degrees), but same low (30C) not-necessarily-idle temperature on the SSDs inside my EQR6 (even with the internal power supply in that one).

Similar conditions, similar computers (form factor and CPU with "integrated graphics"), same room (not "high" room temperature), both new (no dust, factory applied thermal paste, and I won't take them apart (yet) to renew the paste), both well ventilated (or actually not extremely well ventilated for the V1, but it's not that one running hot), not stressed drives or CPUs (just idle running for at least 30 min, but as I mentioned 90 min idle at a maximum of 10% CPU makes no difference).

Just checked right now...
The computer has been idle all day, and even cooler in the room now (about 17 deg), and I changed the power plan to "balanced", except putting it to sleep (which would probably have cooled down the disk)..

During the night, I will adjust the power settings to limit CPU to be between 5 and 10%.. It will be unusable (for other than just this test), but just to see if the temperature drops.

It is very likely that the SSD itself has high power consumption. Even if the CPU is limited to 5%-10%, it will not have much effect on the heat of the SSD, because the heat of the SSD is mainly generated by the SSD itself, which is different from the heat of the CPU. I suggest that you buy high-quality thermal grease to replace it and see if the temperature drops or replace the SSD, such as Samsung

I got my AceMagic T8 Plus from Amazon a few weeks ago and looks like I have a different brand of SATA SSD than what you got. Here are my screen shots for your reference.

It's new, I shouldn't have to replace anything (and by opening it and manipulating it, I would void the warranty). Temperature went down back to 66C when lowering the CPU to 5-10%, so no major difference.

That's some difference (at least comparing to the over 70 deg I had when just idling for a couple of hours), still a bit hotter than normal-sized 2280 SSDs, but that might be because of the smaller size of both SSD and case.
The speed of the SSD in my unit is about the same as yours. Temperature of SSD is 67 deg now (so still high after idling during the night in the cold(er) room).
